The 'Mosque of Piety', located in Gelvan Park, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), South Africa, is the largest mosque and Islamic centre in the Eastern Cape, and proudly serves the Muslim community of Nelson Mandela Bay.
Masjidut Taqwa Islamic Centre (MTIC) aims to be a vibrant hub of Islamic teachings and practice, that provides religious direction and spiritual upliftment to the immediate and extended Muslim community of the mosque and city, with a goal of continually seeking increased consciousness (Taqwa) of Allah, the Most High.
Masjidut Taqwa Islamic Centre (MTIC) serves Allah, the Most High, and the Muslim community by catering for their religious, social, civic and educational needs through offering - in addition to being a prayer facility - an array of programmes, events, services and initiatives that foster Islamic values and social cohesion, advance Islamic education and intellectualisation, and provide critical community services inspired by Islamic teachings.
From the time of our beloved Prophet Muhammad
(SAW, peace be upon him), the Masjid (mosque) has been the central focus of a
Muslim community. Undoubtedly, the Prophet’s (SAW) mosque in Medina, Masjidun
Nabawi, was not just a prayer facility. It was a multipurpose, family-centered establishment
that served as a school, meeting place, and venue for community events and celebrations.
At Masjidut Taqwa Islamic Centre, our objective is to build on this immense heritage and help shape the identity
of future generations of proud and practising Muslims in South Africa.
Masjidut Taqwa Islamic Centre adheres to the belief code of the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa'ah and performs their prayer and religious obligations primarily in accordance with the Shafi'ee Madh-hab (jurisprudence school of thought).
The Masjid currently operates as an Islamic centre with the following facilities and amenities:
Masjidut
Taqwa Islamic Centre is headed by its Head Imam, Sheikh Mukhtar Raban, and governed by the
mosque’s Board of Trustees.
The resident Imam of Salaah at the Masjid is Moulana Rushdie Nackerdien.
Masjidut Taqwa Islamic Centre is currently embarking on a renovation project to upgrade certain offices, the education complex and ablution areas. Upon completion of the renovation project, the education complex and mosque will feature the following:
