Ministerial Voices: Advocating for Justice at Masjid Taqwa

by Yaghya Jappie

This year Masjidut Taqwa hosted Jumu’ah with two influential ministers. In April, the Deputy Minister Alvin Botes highlighted solidarity with Palestine. In May, Minister Ebrahim Patel emphasized Muslim sacrifices and collective support for the oppressed.

On 19 April 2024, Masjidut Taqwa hosted Qari Mustaqeem Paulse as the guest speaker for Jumu’ah. His insightful address was complemented by a short address from CDE Alvin Botes, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, who spoke on the ongoing Palestinian struggle. Emphasizing the importance of international solidarity, he detailed efforts to invoke the Geneva Convention in response to the Israel-Palestine conflict. The Deputy Minister also highlighted the role of African nations in championing Palestinian rights, expressing gratitude for the Muslim community's unwavering support.

A month later, on 26 May, Masjidut Taqwa’s Head Imam, Shaykh Mukhtar Raban delivered a thought-provoking talk on "Guiding South African Muslims in Electoral Choices Through Islamic Views." Following his address, Minister Ebrahim Patel, South Africa's Minister of Trade and Industry, addressed the congregation and online viewers. He underscored the sacrifices made by Muslims in support of the oppressed, reflecting on the unique challenges faced by South Africans. Minister Patel emphasized that the collective support and prayers of the Muslim community can lead to meaningful change.

Both Jumu'ah events highlighted the intersection of faith and activism, reminding attendees of their roles as advocates for justice. The messages resonated deeply, particularly the reflections on the community and the broader societal responsibilities of the community. As the community gathered in prayer and discussion, the significance of solidarity in addressing pressing global issues became clear.

Masjidut Taqwa continues to serve as a vital platform for dialogue and reflection, where faith intersects with contemporary challenges. These Jumu'ah sessions are not just about spiritual enrichment but also about fostering awareness and inspiring action among community members, illustrating the power of collective effort in pursuing justice and peace.

Masjidut Taqwa remains committed to community service with integrity and respect for all, maintaining a neutral stance on political affiliations. The political opinions expressed by individuals at our events do not reflect Masjidut Taqwa's views.
